Lab 1 of 20: Create a Resource Group for the Project

Lab Overview

In this task, you lay the foundation for the entire monitoring project by creating a dedicated resource group in Azure. A resource group acts as the organizational container that holds all related resources for the solution you'll build—virtual machines, web apps, networking components, monitoring tools, and more.

In this lab, you'll set up the resource group that will serve as the central location for every deployment and configuration task that follows, giving you a clean and consistent workspace for the rest of the project.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lab, you will be able to:

Navigate the Azure portal to locate and access the Resource Groups service.
Create a new resource group using Azure’s guided deployment workflow.
Apply consistent naming conventions when provisioning Azure resources.
Verify and validate successful resource group creation within the portal.

Autoscaling Metrics

Host metrics: CPU, memory, disk (no agent needed).
Guest metrics: Custom counters (Azure Diagnostics Extension).
App Insights: Application-level performance metrics.
Rules: Min/max capacity, scale-out/in thresholds, cooldown periods.

Autoscale rules use metrics from Load Balancer, Diagnostics, or App Insights.

Availability & Zones

Single zone: All VMs in one availability zone.

Zone balance: Auto-spread VMs evenly across zones (±1 VM).
Fault domains: 1–3 per zone for best-effort resilience.

Use availability zones for datacenter-level failure protection.
