Deploy and Configure an Azure VM

Lab Overview

In this lab, you’ll learn how to deploy and configure an Azure Virtual Machine (VM) using the Azure portal. The lab walks you through the steps of creating a new virtual machine, configuring its settings, including availability zones, security options, and network configuration.

You’ll also learn how to attach and configure disks for your VM, manage network access, and ensure that resources such as IPs and NICs are properly deleted when the VM is removed.

Learning Objectives

Understand the process of deploying a Windows Server 2019 Virtual Machine in Azure.
Learn how to configure availability zones and security options during VM deployment.
Gain hands-on experience configuring disk sizes and types for both the OS and data disks.
Set up networking for the VM, including configuring virtual networks, subnets, and inbound ports.
Configure the deletion of associated IPs and NICs when the VM is deleted.
Review and validate VM settings before final deployment.

Autoscaling Metrics

Host metrics: CPU, memory, disk (no agent needed).
Guest metrics: Custom counters (Azure Diagnostics Extension).
App Insights: Application-level performance metrics.
Rules: Min/max capacity, scale-out/in thresholds, cooldown periods.

Autoscale rules use metrics from Load Balancer, Diagnostics, or App Insights.

Availability & Zones

Single zone: All VMs in one availability zone.

Zone balance: Auto-spread VMs evenly across zones (±1 VM).
Fault domains: 1–3 per zone for best-effort resilience.

Use availability zones for datacenter-level failure protection.
