Lab Collection Overview

The Active Directory Skillbuilder Collection gives you 11 guided labs covering the day-to-day work of standing up and running an on-premises Active Directory domain. Nothing to install, no servers to build.

Each lab includes built-in audio and visual guidance that walks you through every step. Labs can be run as many times as you want, so you can come back to anything that didn't stick the first time.

Across four modules you'll install the AD DS role, promote and verify domain controllers, join member servers to the domain, create users and groups, design an OU structure with delegated administration, build and troubleshoot Group Policy, transfer FSMO roles, and configure a domain password policy.

What these labs are (and aren't): they're realistic simulations of the Windows Server tooling, not a live domain. You can't go off-script or break things. That makes them fast and convenient for building reps on a task before doing it for real, but if you want to experiment freely, a homelab is still the better tool. Use both.

Written for help desk technicians moving into systems administration, admins who inherited a domain they didn't build, and anyone who wants real reps in Active Directory instead of another video to watch.

What You'll Learn
Install AD DS and promote a domain controller
Verify a DC promotion actually succeeded
Join member servers and transfer FSMO roles
Create users and build a group-based access model
Design an OU structure and delegate administration
Build, target, and troubleshoot Group Policy
Configure and enforce a domain password policy
Module 3
Group Policy Management & Troubleshooting

Group Policy is where most AD questions actually land. You'll build a GPO that maps a network drive, then use gpresult, the tool every admin reaches for, to prove which settings applied, which didn't, and why.

Module 4
Password Policies, Auditing, and Account Controls

Lock down the accounts you've been creating. You'll configure the domain password policy that every user in the domain has to live with (length, complexity, history, and age requirements) and verify the settings actually take effect when a user changes their password.
