Hands-On Azure Labs: Building Redundant Cloud Solutions

Lab 29: Configure DNS and Test Name Resolution

Lab Overview

In this lab, you will finalize your multi-region setup by integrating Azure Traffic Manager with a custom DNS domain, ensuring that external users can access your globally distributed application through a branded URL. You will create DNS records (CNAME or alias) to point traffic to your Traffic Manager profile, then test name resolution to confirm everything is working end to end.

Learning Objectives

    • Configure your custom domain’s DNS zone to reference the Traffic Manager profile.
    • Understand the differences between CNAME and alias records for routing traffic to Traffic Manager.
    • Verify end-to-end name resolution and confirm that users can reach the multi-region application seamlessly.
    • Validate that updates to DNS propagate correctly and no conflicts arise with existing DNS entries.

Exam Relevance

    • AZ-104 (Azure Administrator): Demonstrates ability to manage custom domain records within Azure DNS or external registrars, linking them to Azure services.
    • AZ-305 (Azure Solutions Architect): Reinforces best practices for designing a cohesive, user-friendly, and globally available application access strategy.
