Lab Overview

As organizations move to the cloud, infrastructure becomes more difficult to map, because environments become more complex. This often leads to lost resources or hidden instances.

Configuring a cloud account, like Azure, allows you to use the Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring feature to manage hybrid environment metrics and status through a single console so you can compare performance, locate bottlenecks, and better plan capacity and resource allocation.

Learning Objectives

In this interactive, hands-on SolarWinds simulation, you will be through the process of onboarding an Azure subscription in SolarWinds, after which, you’ll setup monitoring of an Azure VM.

Autoscaling Metrics

Host metrics: CPU, memory, disk (no agent needed).
Guest metrics: Custom counters (Azure Diagnostics Extension).
App Insights: Application-level performance metrics.
Rules: Min/max capacity, scale-out/in thresholds, cooldown periods.

Autoscale rules use metrics from Load Balancer, Diagnostics, or App Insights.

Fault domains: 1–3 per zone for best-effort resilience.

Use availability zones for datacenter-level failure protection.
